What We Do as a Center for Independent Living
Advocacy
Assistance in gaining equal access to services that individuals with disabilities are entitled to receive.
Information and Referral
Information about assistive devices, recreation, accessibility, legislation, and other disability-related topics. Referrals are also made to local service providers to assist individuals in locating resources needed to become or remain independent and in the community.
Peer Support
We offer peer support for people with disabilities by people with disabilities.
Independent Living Skills
Assistance in obtaining the skills needed to live independently, such as financial management, acquired social skills, household management etc.
Transition Services
Transition services encompass three primary areas. 1. We collaborate with school systems and other agencies to assist students with disabilities transition from middle school to high school and to post graduate opportunities. 2. We provide information on assistance and services to transition out of long term care facilities, rehabilitation programs and other institutions back in the community. 3. We assist individuals to maintain and/or increase their independence to prevent admission to long term care environments. We facilitate housing modifications to assist eligible individuals to remain in their homes and communities.
Our Services
We assist individuals with disabilities to live as independently as possible. The center also serves the community at large by helping to create an environment that is accessible to all. NRV DRC is a non-profit community agency, supported in part by a grant from The Commonwealth of Virginia and the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), the federal government, and through generous individual contributions. Governed by a local Board of Directors of which the majority identify themselves as disabled. NRV DRC serves residents in the counties of Floyd, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Giles and the City of Radford.
Assistive Technology
Borrow from our LEAN (Loaned Equipment Assistance Network) while you recover from a temporary injury or need a rehabilitation aid. We can also help find permanent equipment.
Support Groups
Assistance in identifying groups and/or programs to address individual needs.
Employment Services
Referral to and assistance with obtaining employment and with work-related issues related to disabilities.
Home Modifications
Ramps, grab bars, walk-in showers, etc. provided to financially eligible individuals, dependent on the availability of funds and granting programs.
Presentations
Presentations for individuals, organizations, and businesses. We offer presentations on ADA compliance and disability etiquette training, among many other topics.
Disability Rights
Information about your rights and evaluations of local businesses, organizations, etc. to ensure that all accessibility guidelines are followed.
Community Advocacy
Community needs of people with disabilities are identified and strategies are developed to address those needs.
Educational Transition Services
Collaboration with Special Education Advisory Committees and other agencies to assist students with disabilities.
